Probably not the best way to make s’mores!
The Story
The highlights from this video
As the temperatures in Dallas begin to dip, many homeowners find themselves asking a critical question: 'How can I get through one winter with my furnace?' This was the exact dilemma faced by one of our clients who was reluctant to let go of his aging heating system. With the chilling winds outside, he was desperate for a solution but unsure if his furnace could handle another season of service.
During our technician's visit, he provided some candid advice: 'Tell him to buy some socks, a couple blankets, cover the windows, get that cold air out of that glass pane.' While these suggestions may provide temporary relief, they don’t address the underlying issues of an inefficient furnace. Many homeowners resort to these makeshift solutions, but they often overlook the importance of proper maintenance to keep their systems functioning effectively.
The technician went on to explain, 'Best thing to do, honestly, is at least get maintenance.' This simple yet crucial step can make all the difference. Regular maintenance not only prolongs the life of a furnace but also ensures it operates at peak efficiency. We discussed the importance of changing air filters regularly, to prevent overheating and ensure warm air flows freely throughout the home.
Our technician also emphasized the need for an all-encompassing approach to furnace care. 'Opening up all the vents so it doesn't have any more resistance against it than what it has to have' is vital. Ignoring these details can lead to costly repairs and an uncomfortable living space. If left unaddressed, a lack of maintenance can result in a furnace that works harder than it should, ultimately leading to a premature breakdown.
In this case, we recommended a thorough maintenance check-up, which included cleaning the furnace and checking for any potential issues. Additionally, we suggested topping off insulation to help the furnace operate more effectively. 'You're still keeping your furnace,' the technician reassured the homeowner, providing hope that the existing system could survive another winter.
As we wrapped up the visit, we made it clear that if the homeowner continued with repeated repairs, he could face a hefty bill down the line. 'Ultimately, what usually leads most customers to replacing their furnace is a major repair,' the technician noted, highlighting the importance of being proactive. 'If you're looking at a repair that's 50% of what your furnace would ultimately cost, it might be time to consider an upgrade.'
For Dallas homeowners, the message is clear: don’t wait until your furnace fails completely. Schedule a maintenance check today to ensure your heating system can handle the cold months ahead. With just a little diligence, you can keep your home warm and cozy without breaking the bank.
How can I get through one winter with my furnace? I think he means one more winter. One more winter with his furnace? Tell him to buy some socks, a couple blankets, cover the windows, get that cold air out of that, that glass pane. You could also set the thermostat a little bit lower, and drop that thermostat just a little bit lower. Put a little bit less wear and tear on it too. If it ain't working at all, you could just get a space heater and some fans, move hot air around. It wouldn't be energy efficient. No, it's definitely not energy efficient. Don't go to sleep or leave with a wand. That's actually how my great-grandmother used to do that back before central AC. Did you go to that house? I lived in that house. Window units, space heaters, they tried to roast a s'more one time on them. Burning yourself right here, and like a foot and a half away, you're freezing again. Best thing to do, honestly, is at least get maintenance. Oh no, but somebody who wants to keep their furnace running at least one more winter had better make sure it's spotless and clean as it can be. For sure. Changing their air filters. You need a fresh filter so it doesn't overheat and cycle and just push around cold air if that happens. And opening up all the vents so it doesn't have any more resistance against it than what it has to have. It can even blow in more insulation. Yeah. Top off some insulation on a furnace that's not working as good as it possibly could. That'll make a difference. You're still keeping your furnace. They probably need to schedule maintenance or something. I gotta let them know that we can make it comfortable in the home without taking crazy, crazy steps. It's not too often that we just can't do anything. Ultimately, what usually leads most customers to replacing their furnace is a major repair. If you're looking at a repair that's 50% of what your furnace would ultimately cost. Well, it's just always breaking. Maybe it's not 50% right then, but. We make three repairs in a year and a half. Repetitive repairs or major repairs is really all it takes for most customers to update their furnace.
