Fall Tune Up Part 5 -A Delicate Little Lifesaver
The Story
The highlights from this video
As the crisp autumn air settles over Dallas, many homeowners start to wonder if their heating systems are truly ready for the chill of winter. It’s a common concern, especially after a long, hot summer. Just last week, one family called us in a panic when their heater struggled to ignite, leaving them with the fear of a cold home. Little did they know, one simple test could be the key to their comfort or a winter of worry.
Upon arrival, our technician immediately focused on the igniter, a critical component of their heating system. "The next thing I want to look at is the igniter itself," he explained, as he prepared to conduct a thorough inspection. It’s not just about checking if it turns on; understanding the igniter’s condition is vital for ensuring a warm home. He carefully examined it for any signs of wear and tear, noting that buildup could indicate a problem.
This particular igniter seemed to be holding up well at first glance, but as our technician delved deeper, he took a resistance reading. "We'll go ahead and check the resistance through it, 48 ohms," he reported, feeling confident that it was in good shape. Yet, he knew that even a seemingly healthy igniter could become a ticking time bomb if not properly maintained. "Sometimes you'll get little white spots on them. That's not what you want to see," he cautioned, reminding us how fragile these components can be.
Though the igniter passed the initial test, our technician’s commitment to thoroughness led him to consult the manufacturer's literature for confirmation. This step is crucial, as it ensures that all components are functioning within their designed parameters. Igniters that are weak or on the verge of failure can lead to bigger issues, including complete system shutdowns during the coldest nights.
In the end, the family was relieved to learn that their heater was in good shape, but it served as a wake-up call for them. Leaving such a critical component unchecked could have resulted in a much more serious situation, possibly leaving them shivering in their own home. The peace of mind they gained was invaluable, knowing they had a reliable heating system going into winter.
So, Dallas homeowners, don’t wait for the first cold snap to discover if your heater is ready to perform. A simple inspection of your igniter can mean the difference between comfort and chaos. Schedule your fall tune-up today with Medley Heating, Air Conditioning & Plumbing, and ensure your home stays warm all winter long.
The next thing I want to look at is the igniter itself. There's two things I'm looking at here. I want to check the actual resistance reading of the igniter, but I also kind of just want to look at it and see if I see any buildup on the igniter. That can sometimes be an indicator that it's wearing out or getting weak. Now with these, you do have to be very careful because they are fragile. Sometimes you'll get little white spots on them. That's not what you want to see. This one here looks pretty good though. We'll go ahead and check the resistance through it, 48 ohms. I feel confident that it's just fine, but before I give it that final okay, I'll look up the manufacturer's literature to confirm that.
