Drain Killers! Part 1
The Story
The highlights from this video
Imagine stepping into the shower after a long day, only to find the water pooling around your ankles because your drain is clogged. This frustrating scenario is all too familiar for many Dallas homeowners. One family recently faced this very dilemma, and they were eager to find a solution without calling in a professional. Fortunately, they discovered a handy tool that not only resolved their problem but also saved them from a costly service call.
The homeowner started by asking, "What is something a homeowner could do for themselves if they're experiencing a slow drain?" This simple yet critical question led them to explore effective DIY solutions. Enter the zip stick, a surprisingly effective tool that can tackle minor clogs with ease. "I use them myself. They're absolutely great," shared one of our technicians, who has seen firsthand the difference this tool can make when used correctly.
The process is straightforward. The homeowner removed the cover from the tub shoe at the bottom of the tub and inserted the zip stick. With a quick motion, they pulled out a clump of hair and debris that had built up over time, resulting in a sigh of relief. "Boom, good to go!" they exclaimed, thrilled at the instant transformation in their shower experience. This simple action not only cleared the slow drain but also restored their faith in DIY home care.
However, it's essential to understand the limitations of these tools. As our technician pointed out, "Any debris trapped in the immediate drain itself, anything further than 10 inches, you couldn't clear a sewer line with one? Absolutely not." Homeowners need to recognize that while zip sticks can handle minor clogs, they aren't a catch-all solution for more significant plumbing issues.
Left unchecked, a slow drain can lead to more severe plumbing problems, such as backups or even sewer line issues. Ignoring the signs can mean unnecessary expenses down the road. The family learned that taking proactive measures with the right tools could spare them future headaches and costly repairs.
After successfully clearing the tub drain, the homeowner felt empowered to tackle other minor plumbing tasks around the house. The zip stick not only saved the day but also boosted their confidence in handling home maintenance. "I never knew it could be this easy!" they remarked, embracing their newfound DIY skills.

So what is something a homeowner could do for themselves if they're experiencing a slow drink? How effective are tools like zip sticks? Very effective. I use them myself. They're absolutely great. So it's very simple. You take the cover off your tub shoe there, right there at the bottom of the tub, and you can just shove it in there, pull the hair out, boom, good to go. Save yourself a service call. Or shove it down the bathroom sink, pull it right back up out of the pop-up assembly, you're good to go. That's all they're really good for. Any debris trapped in the immediate drain itself, anything further than 10 inches. You couldn't clear a sewer line with one? Absolutely not. No, you could try. You may look a little silly, but no, you're not going to be clearing any major drains with that.
