Drain Killers! Part 1
The Story
The highlights from this video
Imagine stepping into your shower after a long day, only to find the water pooling around your ankles. This frustrating scenario is all too familiar for many Dallas homeowners dealing with slow drains. But before you pick up the phone to call a plumber, there's a simple DIY solution that could save you both time and money.
In a recent discussion about common plumbing issues, one of our expert technicians shared some invaluable tips. "So what is something a homeowner could do for themselves if they're experiencing a slow drain?" he asked, setting the stage for a practical solution. The answer lies in a handy tool known as a zip stick, which can help tackle hair clogs and minor debris without the need for professional intervention. "I use them myself. They're absolutely great," he added, underscoring the effectiveness of this simple device.
The process is straightforward: remove the cover from your tub shoe and insert the zip stick to pull out any hair or debris clogging the drain. "You can just shove it in there, pull the hair out, boom, good to go. Save yourself a service call," he encouraged. This quick fix can often clear minor clogs in your bathtub or bathroom sink, restoring normal flow in just a few minutes.
However, it’s crucial to understand the limitations of this approach. Our technician was quick to clarify, "Any debris trapped in the immediate drain itself, anything further than 10 inches... you couldn't clear a sewer line with one? Absolutely not." This means that while zip sticks are great for surface issues, they won't help with deeper, more complicated clogs. Ignoring those significant blockages could lead to major plumbing problems down the line, including backups and expensive repairs.
After implementing this DIY fix, many homeowners report a sense of relief and accomplishment. You'll be amazed at how easy it can be to handle minor plumbing issues yourself, and it can help you avoid unnecessary service calls. Plus, the satisfaction of solving your own problems can strengthen your relationship with your home.
So the next time you're faced with a slow drain, remember this simple solution. Grab a zip stick, give it a try, and see if you can restore the flow. If the clog persists and you suspect a deeper issue, don’t hesitate to contact Medley Heating, Air Conditioning & Plumbing for expert assistance. We're here to help keep your plumbing running smoothly and restore peace to your home!
So what is something a homeowner could do for themselves if they're experiencing a slow drink? How effective are tools like zip sticks? Very effective. I use them myself. They're absolutely great. So it's very simple. You take the cover off your tub shoe there, right there at the bottom of the tub, and you can just shove it in there, pull the hair out, boom, good to go. Save yourself a service call. Or shove it down the bathroom sink, pull it right back up out of the pop-up assembly, you're good to go. That's all they're really good for. Any debris trapped in the immediate drain itself, anything further than 10 inches. You couldn't clear a sewer line with one? Absolutely not. No, you could try. You may look a little silly, but no, you're not going to be clearing any major drains with that.
