Fall Tune Up Part 12 – Fixing the Forgotten Things
The Story
The highlights from this video
As the temperatures begin to drop in Dallas, many homeowners are gearing up for the chilly months ahead. But what if your heating system is already losing precious warmth before it even reaches your living room? This was the exact scenario we encountered during a recent fall tune-up service. A seemingly minor issue—a broken grommet—was allowing air to escape, putting the efficiency of the entire heating system at risk.
Upon inspection, our technician quickly identified the culprit: "There's some air leaking around right here. This little grommet here is broken," he noted. This small, often overlooked piece was critical for maintaining the integrity of the heating system. Without it functioning properly, the home was losing valuable heat, which could lead to higher energy bills and an uncomfortable living environment.
What made this job unique was not just the broken grommet, but the way it had been temporarily fixed in the past. "I don't love this tape. I'll grab some tape here in a bit. Put a fresh piece on there," the technician remarked, pointing out the haphazard tape job that someone had attempted before. While it might not have been an emergency, the makeshift repair was a clear sign that the issue had been neglected for too long. If left unaddressed, this could progress into bigger problems, including reduced system efficiency and potential damage to the heating unit itself.
To solve the issue, the technician replaced the broken grommet and added a fresh layer of sealing tape to ensure no air would escape. "If we had to we could take some silicone and seal it up, but they got this grommet that should work just fine," he explained. This method not only restored the system's efficiency but also provided a more aesthetically pleasing solution than the previous tape job.
The transformation was immediate. The homeowner could feel the difference as the heat flowed more effectively throughout the home. Not only was the system working as it should, but the peace of mind that comes with knowing your home is properly sealed and efficient is priceless. By addressing this small issue, we prevented larger problems down the road, ultimately saving the homeowner both time and money.
In conclusion, don’t let minor issues like a broken grommet turn into major headaches as winter approaches. Regular maintenance and inspections can catch these problems before they escalate. There's some air leaking around right here. This little grommet here is broken so we're going to see if we can put that back in in a little bit better condition to where they're not losing all that air right there. If we had to we could take some silicone and seal it up but they got this grommet that should work just fine. Much better. I don't love this tape. I'll grab some tape here in a bit. Put a fresh piece on there. I think somebody got in here at some point. Just taped up whatever air leaks they made. It's not really hurting anything it just doesn't look nice. Whenever we come back for our AC maintenance we'll take some pan spray and we'll coat this pan with it so that this doesn't progress.
