Fall Tune Up Part 5 -A Delicate Little Lifesaver
The Story
The highlights from this video
As the chill of fall settles over Dallas, homeowners are gearing up for another heating season. But what happens when the heat doesn’t come on as expected? This was the concern for one family who called Medley Heating, Air Conditioning & Plumbing when they noticed their furnace wasn’t firing up properly. With temperatures dropping, they needed a quick resolution before their home turned into an icebox.
Upon arriving at their home, our technician immediately honed in on the igniter, a vital component in ensuring the furnace operates smoothly. "The next thing I want to look at is the igniter itself," he explained, highlighting the significance of this seemingly small part. This delicate device is crucial for lighting the burners, and any issues can lead to a total heating failure, leaving families in the cold.
The technician carefully examined the igniter for any signs of wear. "I want to check the actual resistance reading of the igniter," he noted, as he prepared to take precise measurements. This step is critical because buildup or damage on the igniter can indicate it's losing its effectiveness. He was looking for anything unusual, which could potentially lead to costly repairs down the line.
After a thorough inspection, he found that the igniter had a resistance reading of 48 ohms, which is within the normal range. "This one here looks pretty good though," he reassured the homeowner, but he wasn’t quite ready to give it a clean bill of health just yet. To ensure everything was in top condition, he planned to consult the manufacturer's literature for confirmation.
What made this job unique was the technician’s attention to detail and thoroughness. Many homeowners overlook such a small part, but neglecting the igniter can lead to a furnace that won’t ignite when you need it most. Ignition issues can escalate, potentially causing extensive damage to your heating system. If left unaddressed, this could mean emergency repairs later, not to mention the discomfort of a chilly home.
Once he confirmed the igniter's condition, the technician proceeded to clean any minor debris to ensure optimal performance. With everything in order, he explained the importance of regular maintenance: "A little care can go a long way in extending the life of your furnace and keeping your home warm."
With the igniter functioning perfectly, the family felt a huge weight lifted off their shoulders. They could now rest easy knowing their home was ready for the colder months ahead. The technician's expertise and preventative measures provided them with peace of mind, ensuring their heating system would operate efficiently all season long.
For Dallas homeowners, the message is clear: don’t wait until your furnace fails to check its critical components. Regular maintenance can save you from unexpected breakdowns and costly repairs. Give your heating system the attention it deserves and schedule your fall tune-up today with Medley Heating, Air Conditioning & Plumbing!
The next thing I want to look at is the igniter itself. There's two things I'm looking at here. I want to check the actual resistance reading of the igniter, but I also kind of just want to look at it and see if I see any buildup on the igniter. That can sometimes be an indicator that it's wearing out or getting weak. Now with these, you do have to be very careful because they are fragile. Sometimes you'll get little white spots on them. That's not what you want to see. This one here looks pretty good though. We'll go ahead and check the resistance through it, 48 ohms. I feel confident that it's just fine, but before I give it that final okay, I'll look up the manufacturer's literature to confirm that.
