Fall Tune Up Part 8 – Inside The Plenum
The Story
The highlights from this video
As winter approaches, many Dallas homeowners are getting their heating systems ready for the chilly months ahead. But what about the air you breathe? One homeowner faced a shocking revelation when their air purifier's effectiveness was called into question. "These cells have to be replaced about every two to three years," said the technician, emphasizing the importance of regular maintenance.
Upon inspection, it became clear that even systems that visually appear to be functioning can fall short. "Even if they still visually appear to be working fine, the literature actually says replace them after about two years that they're not very effective." This was particularly concerning for families with allergies or respiratory conditions, as an ineffective air purifier can lead to poor indoor air quality and health issues.
What made this job unique was not just the air purifier, but the technician's thorough investigation into the home’s plenum, the ducting space where air is distributed throughout the house. "What we do have here is a nice access into the plenum. So we'll be able to see if anything gross is going on inside of there," the technician noted, ensuring no dust or contaminants had built up that could compromise the system’s efficiency.
Upon examination, the technician was relieved to report, "This thing is spotless. There's nothing in there at all. It's perfect." This was great news for the homeowner, who had invested in their HVAC system and air quality. If left unchecked, a dirty plenum could not only affect the air purifier's performance but also lead to increased energy bills and system failures.
The technician recommended a regular maintenance schedule to keep the air purifier and HVAC system in optimal condition. They discussed how replacing those cells timely would ensure effective filtration, akin to changing UV bulbs in a lizard habitat, which are crucial for the pet’s health.
For this Dallas homeowner, the transformation was clear: they could breathe easier knowing their air was clean and their system was functioning at its best. Regular maintenance not only prolongs the life of the HVAC system but also protects the health of everyone in the home.

This system does have an air purifier on it. These cells have to be replaced about every two to three years. Even if they still visually appear to be working fine, the literature actually says replace them after about two years that they're not very effective. If you ever had a lizard of any kind, like a bearded dragon, then you know that you have the UV bulbs that you have to keep in their habitat. After a certain amount of time, they stop being productive and effective, even if they are still illuminating. There's a note here that this one was replaced last year in July. I have no reason to replace that. But what we do have here is a nice access into the plenum. So we'll be able to see if anything gross is going on inside of there. This thing is spotless. There's nothing in there at all. It's perfect.
