Ask Medley Furnace Hacks Part 2
The Story
The highlights from this video
As the temperatures in Dallas start to drop, many homeowners find themselves asking the same question: Is my furnace prepared to keep my home warm? For some, the answer might be a chilling 'no.' Just the other day, we received a frantic call from a family whose furnace was struggling to heat their home. "I don’t know what’s going on; it’s freezing in here," one of the homeowners lamented. This situation is not uncommon, especially as we head into the winter months.
Upon arrival, our technician Colton assessed the furnace and noticed it was not only dusty but also had closed vents throughout the house. “You need a fresh filter so it doesn’t overheat and cycle. It’ll just push around cold air if that happens,” he explained, highlighting a crucial yet often overlooked maintenance step. A dirty air filter can restrict airflow, leading to inefficiencies and a furnace that works harder than it needs to. This can not only increase energy bills but also shorten the lifespan of the unit.
Colton also pointed out, “Opening up all the vents so it doesn’t have any more resistance against it than what it has to have” is vital for optimal performance. Many homeowners may not realize that closed vents can create unnecessary strain on the furnace, leading to potential breakdowns. In this case, the family had inadvertently created an environment where their furnace was fighting to function properly.
In addition to cleaning the air filter and opening all the vents, we recommended they top off their insulation. "It can even blow in more insulation; that’ll make a difference," Colton advised. Proper insulation not only helps maintain heat but also enhances energy efficiency, saving the family money in the long run.
After performing routine maintenance and suggesting these practical hacks, we ensured the furnace was running smoothly again. The transformation was immediate—the family could feel the warmth returning to their home, and the smiles on their faces were priceless. It’s incredible how a few simple steps can make such a significant difference.
Ignoring furnace maintenance can lead to unexpected failures and costly repairs, especially during the colder months. It’s essential for homeowners to stay proactive about their heating systems. As we wrapped up, we encouraged them to schedule regular maintenance: “For someone who wants to keep their furnace running at least one more winter, had better make sure it’s spotless and clean as it can be.”
