Ask Medley Furnace Hacks Part 2
The Story
The highlights from this video
As the chill of winter settles into Dallas, many homeowners are reminded of the importance of a well-functioning furnace. Imagine waking up to a frigid house, only to find out your furnace has decided to take the season off. For one couple in the area, this was a harsh reality, and they knew they needed to act fast. 'Some people have a gas stove and you can actually turn on the gas stove and let that kind of heat up the house,' shared Colton, a technician at Medley. 'It's actually how my great-grandmother used to do that back before central AC.' But relying on the stove isn't an ideal long-term solution.
Upon inspection, Colton found that the furnace was struggling due to a lack of regular maintenance. 'To keep your furnace running at least one more winter, you had better make sure it's spotless and clean as it can be,' he advised. This meant checking the air filter, which had not been changed in months. A dirty filter can lead to overheating and inefficient heating cycles, pushing around cold air instead of warming the home. This couple learned the hard way how neglecting such a simple task can lead to bigger issues.
While the couple had been proactive by opening up all the vents, they didn't realize that this alone wouldn't solve the underlying problems. 'You need a fresh filter so it doesn't overheat and cycle,' Colton explained. The couple's efforts were commendable, but they needed to go a step further to ensure their furnace operated correctly. Colton recommended they consider adding more insulation to help with efficiency. 'It can even blow in more insulation,' he noted, indicating that this could significantly enhance the furnace's performance.
The couple decided to schedule a maintenance check with Medley, which turned out to be the best decision they could make. During the visit, technicians performed a thorough cleaning of the furnace, checked all components, and replaced the old air filter. They also discussed the importance of regular maintenance, which not only prolongs the life of the furnace but also saves homeowners from unexpected breakdowns during the coldest months.
The transformation was immediate. 'We felt the difference right away,' the homeowner mentioned, clearly relieved to have a functioning heating system again. With their furnace back in top shape, they could enjoy a warm and cozy home throughout the winter, without any worries.
As the winter season approaches, Dallas homeowners should take heed of this couple's experience. Neglecting furnace maintenance can lead to discomfort, higher energy bills, and costly repairs.
