Fall Tune Up: Part 1
The Story
The highlights from this video
As the temperatures begin to cool down in Dallas, many homeowners think about getting their HVAC systems ready for the winter. However, what happens when you venture into your attic and find more than just a dusty old furnace? During a recent fall tune-up, our technician discovered a series of issues that could have led to bigger problems down the road. 'You ever wonder what goes on during a fall tune-up? Watch this,' he said, setting the stage for a deep dive into the heart of the home.
Upon entering the attic, the technician took a moment to survey the landscape. 'The first thing I do is kind of just get a lay of the land,' he explained. What he found was a bit alarming: layers of insulation piled on top of each other, wires left abandoned, and a gas line that was turned off but not capped. This combination of neglect and oversight could not only waste energy but also pose safety risks. It's critical to address these issues before they escalate, as they can lead to costly repairs or even hazardous situations.
The technician noted, 'They definitely need a top off,' referring to the insulation that needed attention. Proper insulation is vital for maintaining temperature control and reducing energy bills, especially as the colder months arrive. Inadequate insulation can lead to higher heating costs and uncomfortable drafts, turning your cozy home into a chilly space.
While inspecting further, he spotted rust forming in the drain pan. 'I see some rust starting to form here in this drain pan,' he remarked. This was particularly concerning because rust can indicate a leak or moisture issue, potentially leading to mold and water damage. Even though he didn’t see anything wet at the moment, the presence of rust suggested that action was needed.
To address these issues, the technician recommended a thorough cleaning of the attic, capping the unused gas line, and discussing the insulation top-off with the homeowners. These steps would not only enhance the efficiency of their HVAC system but also improve the overall safety of their home. He emphasized, 'We'll see if they want to speak to a plumber about capping that off properly.'
After completing the necessary actions, the transformation was remarkable. The homeowners felt reassured knowing that their HVAC system was operating efficiently, and they had mitigated potential risks that could have led to more significant issues later on. 'Just kind of look around, see if I see anything that stands out before I ever even touch the equipment,' the technician concluded, highlighting the importance of a thorough inspection during maintenance.

You ever wonder what goes on during a fall tune-up? Watch this. So anytime I'm doing a maintenance or a service call of any kind and I come into the attic, the first thing I do is kind of just get a lay of the land. Just look around and sort of see what I see. Like in this attic for example, it looks like they had insulation and then they had insulation blown on top of that insulation. They definitely need a top off. See they've got some kind of strange things going on here. They've got wires from something that's been abandoned through the years. A gas line here that's turned off, but it's not capped off. We'll see if they want to speak to a plumber about capping that off properly. See if they want us to get some of this stuff out of here. And I see some rust starting to form here in this drain pan. I don't see anything wet, so I don't know how that got in there, but I do want to investigate that a little bit and see what's going on there. Just kind of look around, see if I see anything that stands out before I ever even touch the equipment.
