Fall Tune Up Part 13 – What the Eye Can’t See… 🌡️
The Story
The highlights from this video
As the leaves begin to change and temperatures drop in Dallas, many homeowners start to prepare their heating systems for the chilly months ahead. However, what many don’t realize is that the attic can be a breeding ground for hidden issues that could lead to significant energy loss and costly repairs. During a recent fall tune-up, our technician utilized a thermal imager to investigate potential air leaks that could be lurking out of sight. "See if we see anything with a thermal imager that we don't want to see air leaking maybe where we don't want to see it leaking," he remarked, setting the stage for a thorough inspection.
As he scanned the attic, the thermal imager highlighted various temperature variations, revealing the hottest parts of the equipment. "You see the hottest part of the equipment right there," he noted, indicating a crucial area that could indicate inefficiency. While the investigation showed no alarming signs of intense heat concentration around the flue pipe, the technician was cautious, mentioning, "Sometimes birds will get in those flue stacks and make nests and can cause some real issues." This kind of blockage can lead to dangerous consequences, including carbon monoxide buildup.
The technician focused on a particular joint where the temperature was slightly elevated compared to the surrounding areas. "It looks like it's a little warmer than everything surrounding it," he observed. This could signal that the insulation in that area was not performing as effectively as it should. While it was not overly concerning at this stage, he emphasized the need to monitor it closely. "It's not overly concerning unless we see something else to accompany that that would make us alarmed," he said, highlighting the importance of vigilance.
For homeowners, ignoring these subtle signs can lead to escalating energy bills and a less comfortable living environment. Air leaks can cause your heating system to work overtime, leading to premature wear and tear. During the service, the technician addressed the minor insulation concerns by recommending additional insulation in that specific area to enhance efficiency.
The transformation for the homeowner was significant. Not only did they gain peace of mind knowing their heating system was in good shape, but they also took proactive steps to improve their home's energy efficiency. This kind of preventative maintenance can save homeowners hundreds, if not thousands, in the long run.
